Beyond Politics
Beyond Politics
The intent of this course is to give you a biblical understanding of government. What does Scripture actually say about God's design for this institution?
We will begin by studying Genesis 1-9 to ground our thinking in God's original design for government. This will be further developed as we look at key passages in the New Testament. Throughout this study, we will come to see how God's people should respond to their civil authorities (praying for leaders, paying your taxes, showing honor, submitting).
God exhorts His people to show honor and submit to their political authorities, but is there an exception to this? Yes. Thus, we will study Acts 5:29 and look at implications pertaining to civil disobedience.
In the second half of this course, we will survey evangelical history. How have American evangelicals acted in the political arena over the last 180 years? This historical survey will be divided into two parts: pre- and post-1970.
One of the major takeaways from this course are five principles that I provide for engaging the political arena. My prayer is that this course will lead you to honor Christ, help you think more biblically about political action, and give you a greater love for the lost.
