Course Of The River Ouse
The River Ouse is a river in North Yorkshire, England, that flows into the River Humber estuary. The Ouse rises in the hills of the North York Moors and passes through the market towns of Helmsley, Thirsk and Selby before reaching the city of York. The river is an important navigational channel and is used by tourist and recreational boats. At its source in the North York Moors, the River Ouse is a tiny stream but it quickly grows as it meanders through the hills, through the market towns and villages of the Vale of York. It eventually joins the Rivers Foss and Don at York, creating a larger navigable waterway. Further downstream, the Ouse passes through the city of Selby, where much of the water remains shallow and slow-moving. The river continues through the Selby to York Turnpike and arriving at the city of York, meets the Foss and Don Rivers at Lendal Bridge, creating a larger and deeper river. From here, the Ouse continues on its journey to meet the River Humber Estuary. At various points along the course of the River Ouse, tributaries join its course, adding to the overall size of the river. Some of the more important tributaries include the River Swale, the River Ure and the River Nidd. The River Ouse is popularly used for recreational activities such as kayaking, canoeing, boating and fishing. There are a number of harbours and mooring spots along its course and a number of visitor attractions, ranging from nature reserves to historic buildings, are also located along its banks. The River Ouse plays an important part in the ecology of the North York Moors, with a number of different species of fish and plant life living in and around it. The river also plays an important role in the local economy, with industries located around it providing jobs for those living in the surrounding communities.
