Comparative Religion Course Syllabus
A comparative religion course syllabus provides an overview of religious studies from an academic standpoint. It should introduce students to multiple religions and religious concepts, while also providing an opportunity to explore how different traditions interact with each other. While every course will differ based on the instructor’s individual preferences and design, topics often covered in comparative religion course include: * Introduction to religious studies: This section offers a broad overview of religious studies and its various facets, such as elements of religion, the global scope of religious expressions, as well as its intersection with philosophy, science and culture. * Specific religious traditions: Comparative religion courses typically focus on four or five religious traditions in-depth. Traditions may include, but are not limited to, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Native American religions. Texts will often be used to help students better understand the beliefs and practices of each tradition. * World Views and Morality: This section will explore how different religions approach major concepts such as truth, justice, and morality. Discussions may also focus on how particular traditions view death and what happens afterward. * Contemporary Issues: Finally, students will consider how different religions grapple with modern issues in our society. Topics may include abortion, same-sex marriage, and the environment. At the end of the course, students should have a better understanding of the diversity and complexity of world religions. Additionally, they should have stronger critical thinking and writing skills, and a greater ability to appreciate religious life from an interdisciplinary perspective.
