Bauhaus Preliminary Course
The Bauhaus Preliminary Course is an important and highly influential course in design education and the history of modern art. It was first taught at the Bauhaus School of Arts and Crafts in Germany during the early 1920s. The Bauhaus Preliminary Course was created by Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius as a foundation to the school's more advanced courses in architecture and design. The course focused on basic elements of design, such as line, form, color, and composition, as well as broader ideas of the artist's process, the use of materials, and expression. The Bauhaus Preliminary Course featured a number of faculty members, most notably Johannes Itten, Paul Klee, and Wassily Kandinsky, all of whom were important figures in the modern art movement. Itten's unique version of the course emphasized experimentation with materials, as well as an undercurrent of spiritual ideas and concepts. Klee's version of the course focused on the concept of visual design, teaching linear and geometric composition, as well as spatial planning. Kandinsky's version emphasized the expressive power of color and form through the concept of abstract expressionism. The influences of the Bauhaus Preliminary Course can still be found in the modern art and design world today. It was an important part of the education of a number of notable artists, such as Mies van der Rohe, Marcel Breuer, and László Moholy-Nagy. Its influence also extended to designers of products and graphics. It is credited with helping to popularize the modernist style, although it did not invent this design style. The Bauhaus Preliminary Course showed the importance of exposing students to basic principles of design and fundamental elements of the artist's process. It was an essential part of the development of the modernist movement.
