Arizona Golf Course Overseeding Schedule

Golf courses in the state of Arizona often undertake an important process known as overseeding. Overseeding is the term given to the process of planting new grass seed in existing turfgrass. This allows golf course superintendents and turf managers to battle the heat, which is a common issue in Interstate 8 areas, as well as bring in a seasonal green-ness throughout the fall and winter months. Although overseeding can take place any time of the year, Arizona golf courses usually opt for the process to occur between the months of September and November. This allows the new grass seed to germinate and establish new root systems to better withstand the hot and dry summer months. During September and October, temperatures begin to cool off and moisture starts to increase, which allows the new grass seed to have greater chances of success in taking root. Following those months, overseeding efforts begin to fade out due to the risk of cold temperatures setting in and damaging younger grass sprouts. By overseeding in the fall months, Arizona golf courses can ensure that their turfgrass remains in strong condition throughout the hot and dry summer months, while also reinforcing the aesthetics of the course in the cooler fall and winter months. This allows golf courses in Arizona to provide an attractive and enjoyable experience to golfers all year-round.
